books….again

Posted on August 17th, 2008 in Uncategorized by kavzy1984

I found some more books to read…hopefully i will be giving a short review about each one. If any one has recommendations please let me know. Im happy to read anything!

the book I recently finished reading, which has been a controversial book, a book called Girls of Riyadh by Rajaa Alsanea. A tale of 4 young saudi girls/women whose lives change over the years as they experience, love, marriage, and heartbreak.A seriously mild novel which almost reads like english chick lit! There was no inappropiate scenes between characters. i would only really recommend this book if you are interested in reading chick lit from a middle eastern point of view.

The next book im reading is called “East of the Sun” which is set in India.

Shariah Law in UK

Posted on July 4th, 2008 in Uncategorized by kavzy1984

“Shariah law could play a role in some parts of the legal system.”

“No reason why shariah law could not be used in mediation or other forms of alternative dispute resolution”

This was said by the most senior Judge in England and Wales, Lord Phillips.

A smart man who recognises that some aspects of Shariah law could be used in certain situations with regards to muslims, i.e. Divorce, custody of children, property, assets.

He is NOT saying that Shariah law will be implemented throughout England and Wales.

He also says “There is no reason why Shariah principles, or ANY religious code, should not be the basis for mediation….”

Wouldn’t you like to have some form of religious laws used to govern your lives???

Not everyone can live in a land that is ruled by their religion, so make do with the laws of the country. In my case, living in England, I follow british law.

I am not demanding the country to change laws because as muslims we should be governed by Shariah. All Im saying is that if an aspect of Shariah law could be used in teh british legal system then great! It leads the way for other  laws to be included.

In contrast certain laws need to be abolished because they are ludicrous. heres a few I found online:

In the UK, a man who feels compelled to urinate in public can do so only if he aims for his rear wheel and keeps his right hand on his vehicle.

In the UK, a pregnant woman can legally relieve herself anywhere she wants - even, if she so requests, in a policeman’s helmet
Under the UK’s Tax Avoidance Schemes Regulations 2006, it is illegal not to tell the taxman anything you don’t want him to know, though you don’t have to tell him anything you don’t mind him knowing.

It is illegal to die in the Houses of Parliament.

According to a british law passed in 1845, attempting to commit suicide was a capital offense. Offenders could be hanged for trying.

Arabic Classes

A/S

I am nearly finished with my arabic course, which I started last week. I’ve signed up for the foundation course so I can learn properly. First lesson was learning the letters. And not to brag but I think I did really well, although I am struggling with the pronunciation of the letters Ayn and Ghayn!!! I have also learnt the Nun Sakinah and Tanween Rules, and will hopefully be learning the Meem Sakinah and Tanween Rules tomorrow. Its a lot of hard work and there’s a lot of correction I have to make in order to pronounce Surahs correctly. But Alhumdulillah Im really enjoying myself!

The teacher added some interesting quotes from the Qur’an and some ahadeeth about knowledge and explaining the benefits when one seeks knowledge:

Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists)
(  سورة العلق  , Al-Alaq, Chapter #96, Verse #1)

Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous
(  سورة العلق  , Al-Alaq, Chapter #96, Verse #3)

Narrated AbudDarda’: Kathir ibn Qays said: I was sitting with AbudDarda’ in the mosque of Damascus. A man came to him and said: AbudDarda, I have come to you from the town of the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) for a tradition that I have heard you relate from the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him). I have come for no other purpose. He said: I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) say: If anyone travels on a road in search of knowledge, Allah will cause him to travel on one of the roads of Paradise. The angels will lower their wings in their great pleasure with one who seeks knowledge, the inhabitants of the heavens and the Earth and the fish in the deep waters will ask forgiveness for the learned man. The superiority of the learned man over the devout is like that of the moon, on the night when it is full, over the rest of the stars. The learned are the heirs of the Prophets, and the Prophets leave neither dinar nor dirham, leaving only knowledge, and he who takes it takes an abundant portion.  (Book #25, Hadith #3634)

Books etc

A/S

I’m a great fan of reading. I’ll read anything as long as its interesting.  I’ve read so many genres….kiddies, teen/girly, sci fi, biography, historical etc. Lately I’ve been drawn to Asian authors such as Kia Abdullah, Moni Mohsin.

I’m currently reading a book by Vikas Swarup. The concept is definitely unique. An 18 year old boy wins a quiz show. He’s then arrested on suspicion of cheating. In order to prove his innocence he goes through his life story proving how he knew all the answers.

A few days ago I finished “End of innocence” by Moni Mohsin. The book is definitely slow paced. But the story builds up towards the end. The story revolves around an 8 year old girl who inadvertantly spills her best friends’ secrets triggering a catastrophic set of events.

I’m now going to trawl the net for other asian authors and see if I can find any other books worth reading.

If you have any recommendations please leave me a list! I’d be happy to read. AND maybe we could discuss/ debate the novels!

Brotherhood

Posted on June 18th, 2008 in Uncategorized by kavzy1984

Yesterday I watched a Korean film called “Brotherhood”. Its a tale of 2 brothers who are drafted into the Army to fight the North Koreans in 1950. The older brother keeps risking his life in order to save the younger brother so that he may take care of the family and make something of his life.      Now if anyone has seen the film, Im sure you would agree with me that it is a moving tale. Many times I had a lump in my throat and an unshed tear in my eye.

but what was most upsetting was the way war was portrayed in the movie. The killing, the maiming, the treatment of POWs. It really opened my eyes to what happens during a war.

It made me think of the wars being waged in this world. The war torn countries like Kashmir, Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Sierra Leone, Bosnia……….

No war is justified especially when the number of casualties increases yet the situation doesn’t improve.

What we all need is to learn a little more tolerance, to be a little bit more giving and also to be alot more thankful.

Love, Life & Assimilation (part 2)

Posted on June 17th, 2008 in Uncategorized by kavzy1984

I finished the book yesterday evening and to be honest……..its BRILLIANT!!! As soon as I finished it I called my friend up ( who recommended it) and we spent hours on the phone discussing each aspect mentioned in the book…drugs, sex, violence, culture, religion…

We both realised that we could relate to the book. It’s like the author met every single asian girl in East London and said “Whats your life like?” and wrote it all down in her novel. Funnily enough, 60% of the novel was based on the Authors own experiences!

I highly recommend the book to every girl out there who feels like she is the only one whose life sucks or any woman wanting to know what life is like for many asian girls!

Love, Life & Assimilation

I’m just about to read a book by a bengali author who was recently on the programme “Women in Black”. It comes highly recommeded from a  friend who has hardly EVER read a book in her life ( it took her 6 months to read Mark Haddons first book!)….

SO I will report back to you whether its worth reading!

Road Rage (part 2)

Posted on June 13th, 2008 in Uncategorized by kavzy1984

Ive had no more episodes of road rage…but thought I do another post dedicated to  panic buying at petrol stations this weekend, which is sure to spark road rage in some people. Truckers are picketing for increased wages but so far no talks have commenced between parties. 1 in 10 stations will run out of petrol this weekend if people start to panic buy.

A few solutions to this problem….

Use public transport

Cancel plans where you are require to drive a great distance

Boycott certain companies such as Shell who provide fuel at higher costs than others forcing them to lower their prices ( eventually).

This weekend I will be driving my car to work because I was smart enough to fill up my car last week. So if anyone spots a woman smiling like a cheshire cat in an orange micra driving past petrol stations………..that will be me!

Road Rage

Posted on June 9th, 2008 in Uncategorized by kavzy1984

Im feeling guilty today.

Yesterday I was driving home from work. I was around the corner from home when a car pulled out and I swerved to avoid it. The car smashed off the metal rim thing on my back wheel. Luckily it wasnt anything serious. But I lost my temper with the lady because she was banging on about her car being new.  She also tried to blame me. So I started yelling at her. Im sorry but I was always taught that when your pulling out you do a blind spot check before you move off.

I realised after that at least no one was hurt and the damage was superficial. But I feel bad that I let my anger get the better of me. I also realised that her back garden connects to mine and that her husband who I’ve spoken to on ocasions is a very nice man.

As this lady lives around the corner I think I will go round later and apologise for being rude. Theres enough problems in the world without me adding to it.

So I say to all people, think before you react to a situation. Its not worth being rude just to make yourself feel better.
